Closure of the Aloha Specialties restaurant at California Hotel & Casino

In Las Vegas, the Aloha Specialties restaurant, housed inside California Hotel & Casino, was temporarily closed. The decision to suspend operations was made by the Southern Nevada Health District after an inspection conducted on January 13.

The reason was numerous violations of health and sanitation requirements. In the inspection findings, among the key problems mentioned were issues of staff hygiene, including proper handwashing, as well as the condition of work surfaces and compliance with rules for food handling.

The January 13 inspection: numbers and key wording

The Southern Nevada Health District inspection on January 13 ended with the assessment of 31 penalty points, which in the department’s reporting reflects the total weight of violations cited across different areas of oversight. It was based on the results of this inspection that the agency decided to close the establishment.

The violations were distributed across several major categories, which are usually regarded as basic elements of food safety. The report included the following sections:

  • permits and required documentation and formal compliance requirements for authorization and paperwork
  • staff hygiene, including compliance with handwashing rules
  • sanitary condition of surfaces and food handling
  • items related to pest control and overall unsanitary conditions

At the same time, public statements do not disclose in detail which specific documents were missing or which specific areas of the kitchen became problem areas. This leaves a noticeable gap in the picture and limits the ability to independently assess the seriousness of each individual episode.

Handwashing as a separate cited violation

Inspectors recorded that employees working with food products did not wash their hands properly in accordance with current health regulations. For inspectors, this item is among the fundamental ones, since it concerns not equipment or paperwork, but day-to-day staff discipline.

In the professional logic of health inspections, handwashing often becomes an indicator of the overall food safety culture in the kitchen. If a basic rule is followed inconsistently, this increases the risks of cross-contamination, when microorganisms are transferred from hands to food, utensils, and prepared dishes.

Sanitation violations and food handling

A separate set of violations concerned the sanitary condition of surfaces and the conditions for working with food. In such cases, the cleanliness of areas where ingredients are prepped is usually called into question, as well as the condition of sections that come into direct or indirect contact with food.

The notice about the inspection results mentioned noncompliance related to contaminated and non-food-contact surfaces. Non-food-contact surfaces are usually understood as areas that are not intended for contact with food, but become involved in the process due to workspace organization, which creates additional grounds for citations by the inspection.

Permits, pests, and the question of the operator’s responsibility

The list of violations also noted formal requirements related to permitting/licensing requirements and compliance with established authorization and documentation procedures. In the department’s brief summary, this section is identified as one component of the overall set of violations, without specifying whether it involved expiration dates, posting/display requirements, or other procedural details.

Items related to pest control were also mentioned separately, as well as overall unsanitary conditions. For the restaurant industry, such wording reads as a signal that inspectors saw not an isolated lapse but a combination of factors affecting the safety and quality of the environment in which food is prepared.

At the same time, it is important to distinguish between the parties’ roles. Aloha Specialties is inside California Hotel & Casino; however, the restaurant is not operated by the hotel and casino itself. In such cases, guests often get the impression that responsibility lies entirely with the host property, but the legal and operational arrangement may be different when the venue is run by a third-party operator.

For the casino, this point was very important, because otherwise the restaurant’s problems could have affected the casino’s reputation. Amid intensifying competition with online casinos, reputation becomes even more important for a casino.

Modern players are indeed increasingly choosing online platforms that offer them a wide selection of gambling games without the need to leave home.

In addition, mobile apps are also considered an additional plus. By downloading such software to a smartphone, you can play not only at home but also in any convenient place. To increase profits, online casinos have increasingly begun offering standalone apps for individual games. Most often these are new titles with original mechanics, such as Plinko or crash games. Traditional national games are also gaining more and more popularity. This is supported by download statistics for the Indian card game Andar Bahar app. Even in the United States, as the Indian diaspora is actively growing there

Against the backdrop of the growing popularity of online platforms, land-based casinos are under real pressure. Reputational damage complicates the situation even further, so they try to avoid it as much as possible.

The SFGATE editorial staff reported that it sent a request for comment to the third-party operator, but had not received a response by the time of publication. The date of a follow-up inspection had also not been posted at the time of the report, and reopening will depend on the results of the follow-up inspection and the correction of the violations.

A place with a history and changing inspection grades

Aloha Specialties is considered one of the notable long-time fixtures of Las Vegas’s dining scene. The establishment opened in 1980 and became known as the first spot in the city known for selling beef jerky, which over time became part of the local lore surrounding the restaurant.

The menu was built around Hawaiian-inspired themes, including teriyaki, rice bowls, and Chicken Tou Saimin soup. The restaurant was located on the mezzanine of California Hotel & Casino, and interior descriptions mentioned umbrellas and wicker chairs that created a resort-lounge atmosphere far from the desert city.

The background is also complemented by different inspection results in different years. In 2016, the restaurant received a C grade amid 36 violations, which shows that health department concerns had arisen before as well. Later, the picture changed, since a 2025 report mentioned an A grade, and the current closure is directly tied to the most recent inspection on January 13 and its results.
